How Great Is Our God

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 1:1 - 11
Sermon Title: "Wisdom and Perspectives" (By Pastor Joseph Lee)
2009-05-17 Message on Ecclesiastes
Wisdom Literature
Proverbs 1:7 says “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge”.
When looking at the ‘wisdom literature’ we must look at Solomon as he authored most of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon.
i. He was the wealthiest man in the world.
ii. He was granted all wisdom by God.
iii. He built the great temple in Jerusalem and much in the nation of Israel.
All of life is meaningless.
There is nothing new under the sun and everything will fade away (Ecc. 1:2-11).
Pleasure and accomplishment is meaningless (Ecc. 2:10-11)
Even wisdom and righteousness is seemingly meaningless since everyone comes to the same end (Ecc. 2:15-16, 3:19-20, 9:2).
Everything is utterly meaningless and bleak…until we have the right perspective.
Wisdom starts with the fear of the Lord.
Meaning is found through acknowledging God’s existence and the order described in the Bible.
i. Since God is real…everything is meaningful.
ii. Every good deed, every prayer, every wicked thing will be judged by God (Ecc. 12:13).
Psalm 72.
The Psalmist starts to understand the order of the world, why it is not meaningless to be good or wicked since the future in God’s sanctuary will reveal all things.
